Clearly, the giant Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) is not your ordinary migrant. It's a cephalopod that grows to over 100 pounds, eats voraciously and may possess an intelligence quotient comparable to that of many mammals. Originally named for the Humboldt Current that flows northward along the coast of Chile, the creature's presence in California has baffled local biologists, ecologists and fishermen.

Giant Humboldt Squid Invade Southern California

The Associated Press is reporting that a massive invasion of giant Humboldt squid is taking place on the coast of Southern California, from Orange County down to San Diego. They are returning after a two and half year hiatus.

The sizable cephalopods, which can weigh 30 pounds or more, come and go as they please. And for whatever reason, thousands have appeared wandering through the Pacific and washing up on beaches.

Humboldt Squid Attacks on KQED QUEST

The KQED QUEST season premier featured a report on Humboldt Squid attacks in Northern California.

A mysterious sea creature up to 7 feet long, with 10 arms, a sharp beak and a ravenous appetite, has invaded ocean waters off Northern California. Packs of fierce Humboldt Squid attack nearly everything they see, from fish to scuba divers. Marine biologists are working to discover why they've headed north from their traditional homes off South America.
